Twelve men from Calvary Chapel Kampala set out on a journey to Luwero Island last week, and returned with great success. Luwero is a unique island, not only because of its distance from the mainland (about seven hours by boat), but also because the island is inhabited by only men. Women are not allowed because the men of the island believe that if they brought women, the island spirit would curse them. There are about three thousand inhabitants on the small fishing island, and among those there are only seven Christians. Mohan Paniyur and Nehemiah Kathuthula, who led the team, reported that many people were eager to hear the gospel, and several of them were baptized. The team showed the Jesus film, installed two pit latrines, and set up a Bio-sand water filter system. They also built relationships with the men of the island, and a few of the team members have plans to return and minister there full time.
This Sunday the team from Luwero Isand will be sharing their story with us. They will present some of their pictures, and tell us what God is doing on the islands of Lake Victoria. |
